Wintertime - Not everyone’s cup of tea

It’s a nice scenery, indeed. But not at the building site! Currently, many building sites in Northern Germany are covered with snow and - because of the low temperatures - are in “stand-by mode”.

This means that e.g. contaminated soils at lots of building sites can’t be removed for treatment or disposal. On the other hand, fresh materials can’t be delivered and at the end of the day this all means “a lot of extra work” as Ole Steffen – manager in charge of building materials – describes it.

Due to the fact that many roads are slippery as ice, the garbage trucks of Willi Damm GmbH – another company within the BUHCK Group which collects and treats packaging waste – were forced to stay in their garages for two days. “We try to do our job as good and as long as we can” Dieter Steffen – Managing Director at Willi Damm – pointed out. But health and security of our employees are very important issues, too. Therefore, we have asked all our customers to keep the entrances to their wheely bins free of ice. If possible, of course!

Temperatures of 0° C or less and water don’t fit together in terms of pipes and drain service. But what to do if you don’t find the right manhole because of lots of snow? And even when you are lucky to find it, what do you do in case that there is no chance to open it because it is completely frozen? Christian Ahlschwede – Managing Director at Canal-Control + Clean – nowadays focuses on private “in-house” pipes and drains. This is currently the only way of doing business for him and his staff.

It is certainly not our aim to spoil the party of many children. But we do hope that weather conditions will change within the next couple of days. Sorry to all the children in and around Hamburg!
